The idea of journaling is very glamorous. It seems like such a quiet and sophisticated hobby, and the people who journal are often seen as such creative and intellectual people.
I am here to tell you that all of these things are completely true! Journaling really is as awesome as it looks.
Journaling is one of my many hobbies and the one I have been doing the longest. As a child, it was always a hobby that fascinated me and one that I wanted to master. After years of trying out different journals, styles of writing, and frequency, it was in 2012 that I discovered what would be my key to consistency and success… nothing.
The best way to journal, in my opinion, is to treat it like a brain drain. Don’t think about grammar, penmanship, or whether what you’ve just written makes you sound like a complete idiot. The best entries are honest, raw, and allow you to reflect on your life at that moment.
Cracking open my journal at least 3 times a week has been a habit for me since 2012 and now I have a whole collection of filled journals to show for it. It’s pretty awesome having a mini library of my own life story!
I may be a pro at it now but it definitely started as a challenge for me.
At first, I imagined writing page after page of beautifully written text only to find that it was a struggle for me just to get past one paragraph. I didn’t know what to write about and oddly, I didn’t trust my journal enough to completely open up. It sounds silly but it’s a common problem!
Once you get past the writer’s block and minor trust issues, it’s smooth sailing from there – I promise 🙂

Journaling Zero To Hero is my carefully designed 4-week challenge that will get you on your way to journaling success. Each week, you are assigned 4 journal prompts that are meant to challenge you more each time. Week 1 is all about lists! I find this to be the best strategy to get writing because it doesn’t involve putting together full thoughts or sentences. This is also a great activity to consistently go back to when you want a break from writing longer entries.
Week 2 will get you into the groove of writing short prompts and answering simple questions like, “What would you do with 1 million dollars?” You will also get to start free-writing during this week!
Week 3 introduces more in-depth prompts that will challenge you to dive deeper into the practice.
Week 4 contains more detailed, introspective questions that are great topics to consistently go back to in your journaling. If you don’t feel ready to go on your own after this week, you can easily do this week’s prompts over again.
