6 Under The Radar Inspirational Women You Need To Know About

One of my favorite things in life are inspirational women who are smart and march to the beat of their own drum. That is what Glamorously You represents, after all! I created it to be a place that fosters women like that, who are confident enough to speak their minds and remain true to who they are.

This week, I wanted to celebrate inspirational women who evoke this glamorous spirit. They are successful, admired, unique, and totally underrated. We’re always hearing about the biggest pioneers and innovators in history, but these women are changing the game under the radar. So, let’s give them some recognition!

Michelle Lee

6 Under The Radar Inspirational Women You Need To Know About

Why she’s amazing

Michelle, without a doubt, has made her mark on the magazine industry. She is currently the Editor-in-Chief at Allure Magazine, but she has contributed her talents to NYLON, In Touch Weekly, Paper Magazine, and many more respected publications. She is responsible for the total makeover you may have seen of Allure over the past year, including a newly designed website and a fresh editorial direction. Michelle was named a “Thought Leader” by Google in 2013 and was recently named Adweek’s Editor of the Year!

Her innovative creativity and forward thinking has been credited as the reason why Allure has seen such success since her start there. In a recent issue, she proclaimed that the publication would no longer use the term “anti-aging”, a major statement coming from a leader in the beauty industry. In addition, Allure’s latest issue was named the “The Science Issue” and covered topics ranging from the ingredients in beauty products to the beauty black market.

Why I admire her

Aside from her successful career and admirable contributions to the magazine and beauty industries, Michelle seems like the most light-hearted and fun person. Following her on Instagram is a daily treat, mainly because of her amazing IG Stories. She talks about her favorite beauty picks, documents her facial misting sessions throughout the day, shows off her eye-catching nail art (my favorite part), and often features “mini Michelle Lee”, her daughter.

Lilliana Vazquez

6 Under The Radar Inspirational Women You Need To Know About

Why she’s amazing

If you watch daytime talk shows, then you have probably encountered Lilliana Vazquez at some point. She is a style expert that has made appearances on shows like Wendy Williams, The Meredith Vieira Show, The Rachael Ray Show, and is a regular on The TODAY Show’s style segments. She is often discussing the latest trends that anyone can achieve without breaking the bank. Her book The Cheap Chica’s Guide To Style is all about sporting a killer style that you can afford, which makes me love her that much more!

Besides being a daytime TV regular and red carpet fashion reporter, Lilliana is the creative director at The LV Guide, a fashion blog, and is in the process of launching TESORO Collective, an online shopping experience.

Why I admire her

Lilliana is super relatable with her successful blog, money saving style tips, and obtainable fashion. She really feels like one of us! She embraces her Texas roots while living it up in the big apple and often talks about her Mexican and Puerto Rican heritage. I connect with her because of all these things, and apparently everyone else does, which is why she keeps popping up on our television screens!

 Rupi Kaur

6 Under The Radar Inspirational Women You Need To Know About

Why she’s amazing

Rupi Kaur is the talented mind behind the poetry books, milk and honey and the sun and her flowers. She has effectively taken an “old-fashioned” art form and not only brought into the modern world, but has made it outrageously relatable. She is a feminist who often includes themes of love, womanhood, and abuse in her writing.

Why I admire her

I had come across her poetry before (it’s style is very recognizable with its all lower case letters typed on a white background with a corresponding sketch), but I never looked into who she was. It wasn’t until recently that I discovered not only that she was a woman, but only 25 years old!

I also admire that she pays homage to her Sikh culture by using Gurmukhi script as inspiration in her writing. She only writes in lowercase and the only punctuation mark she uses is the period. It adds a simplistic but powerful tone to her pieces, which makes them that much more riveting to read.

Stephanie Fleming

6 Under The Radar Inspirational Women You Need To Know About

Why she’s amazing

She’s responsible for pretty much the entire planner aisle in Michaels. That’s reason enough, right?

Stephanie is the mind behind me & my BIG ideas (or “mambi” as she calls it), the company that creates The Happy Planner and those amazing stickers and accessories that go with it. The company was launched at the height of the scrapbooking phenomenon in the late 90s. Her and her mom, Terri, were both avid scrapbookers that decided to add their flair to the industry by creating stickers. Their first office/warehouse/headquarters was located in Stephanie’s garage until the business took off in 1999!

Now, Stephanie acts as the owner/founding partner/VP of Marketing/Creative Director while her family takes on multiple roles as well, from her sister leading the design team to her husband acting as CEO. Despite the business taking off, she has managed to keep the element of love and family alive.

Why I love her

Once I learned about Stephanie’s story, I never looked at her products the same. It all made sense to me; there was so much creativity and love that went into every planner and every sticker. They weren’t just printed out by some machine in a far off land – they were made with love!

I am always amazed at stories of success coming from women who started with just one good idea who saw it all the way through. And that’s why I admire Stephanie Fleming!

Aliya-Jasmine Sovani

6 Under The Radar Inspirational Women You Need To Know About

Why she’s amazing

Aliya-Jasmine Sovani, or “AJ”, is an accomplished journalist, producer, writer, and TV host. She has done extensive work on MTV Canada where she produced and hosted her own sports/pop culture talk show, PLAY with AJ, and hosted the groundbreaking (and totally underrated) show, 1 girl 5 gays. She has been seen reporting everywhere from red carpets to NHL playoffs to Haiti following its devastating earthquake.

Oh yeah, and remember the Save the Boobs campaign from a few years ago? AJ is not only the beautiful woman on screen, she is also the beautiful woman who wrote and directed the campaign as well!

Why I love her

AJ is one of the first inspirational women I came across as a teenager. Late-night channel flipping led me to 1 girl 5 gays and I was immediately a fan. She was young, had brown skin like me, and was so smart with an infectious personality. She was, and still is, an amazing inspiration.

Huda Kattan

6 Under The Radar Inspirational Women You Need To Know About

Why she’s amazing

You may have learned of Huda’s name more recently due to her massively successful Huda Beauty makeup launches this year, but I have been following her career for some time now. In my opinion, she is the OG beauty blogger that took her influencer status and brought it to the next level (before “influencer” was even a term we used).

Huda had humble beginnings as a makeup artist and beauty blogger. Her sister, Alya, helped her financially to be able to sell her first set of false lashes, which became so successful that she was able to start selling them at Sephora! From there, Huda Beauty has launched eyeshadow palettes, liquid lipsticks, foundations, and more.

Why I love her

Huda’s career is so fascinating to me because she has added such an interesting twist to the term “influencer.” She has become the master of all things digital, from her massive following on Instagram to her infectious YouTube videos to her successful blog. Huda adds her personal touch to everything, which is quite possibly why she has seen so much success.

These 6 women do not need the flashing lights and A-list fame to make a difference. Every one of them has revolutionized their respective industry by being themselves and paving their own way. They may not be household names, but we see their work all around us; the Allure magazine on the store shelf, the style segments on the TODAY show, the poetry shared on social media, the planners that catch your eye in Michaels, the viral breast cancer campaign, or the Instagram account with the fun beauty videos.

It just goes to show you that influence and success can be achieved at a micro level. Fame does not equal success. However, innovation, authenticity, and determination may very well get you there, as we have seen with these 6 inspirational women!
